Is there an x402 token?

Short answer: no. x402 is an open payment protocol, not a coin. It has no official token, no price, and no market cap — payments settle in USDC.

Scam warning

Tokens and memecoins using the "x402" name exist on several chains. None are affiliated with the protocol, none are required to use it, and you should treat any "buy x402 to use x402" pitch as a red flag. The protocol issues no token.

Why x402 has no token

x402 is a standard for paying over HTTP — a server replies with HTTP 402 Payment Required and payment terms, and the client pays. It is infrastructure, like HTTP itself. Protocols don't have prices; assets do.

The payment leg uses USDC, a dollar-backed stablecoin, on networks such as Solana or Base. Using a stablecoin is the whole point: an AI agent can pay a predictable $0.01 without a volatile token in the loop. Introducing a speculative "x402 coin" would defeat that — so the protocol, published by Coinbase, deliberately doesn't have one.

What to do instead of buying a token

If you found this page searching for a price, you were probably looking at an unaffiliated token. If you actually want to use x402, you don't need to buy anything — just accept USDC and return a 402. Start with the x402 tutorial or browse 977 real open-source projects in the ecosystem.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official x402 token or coin?

No. x402 is an open payment protocol, not a cryptocurrency. It has no native token and no official coin. Payments over x402 settle in existing stablecoins — almost always USDC — not in an "x402 token". Anyone telling you to buy an "x402 coin" to use the protocol is mistaken or scamming you.

Why do I see an "x402" token with a price then?

Because people create memecoins and speculative tokens that borrow the "x402" name to ride the hype. These are not affiliated with the protocol, are not required to use x402, and carry significant risk. The protocol itself does not issue or endorse any token. Always verify against the official Coinbase x402 documentation.

What does x402 actually use for payment?

USDC, a regulated dollar-backed stablecoin, settled on networks like Base, Solana or Ethereum. A server returns an HTTP 402 response with payment terms; the client (often an AI agent) pays USDC and the request is fulfilled. No protocol-specific token is involved at any step.

Does x402 have a price or market cap?

The protocol has no price because it is software, not an asset — like HTTP or TCP/IP. Any "x402 price" you find refers to an unaffiliated third-party token, not to the protocol published by Coinbase.

How do I invest in or get exposure to x402?

You cannot "invest in" a protocol directly. If you want exposure to the agent-payments theme, that is a question about companies and stablecoins, not an x402 token. Be extremely cautious of any token marketed as the way to invest in x402 — the protocol does not require or endorse one.

So how do I start using x402?

Read the x402 protocol guide, pick an SDK in your language, and accept USDC on a network like Base. You will never need to buy a token to do this. See our x402 tutorial to ship a paid endpoint.
